Jaylen Johnson just returned to action for the Hawks after dealing with a right shoulder injury. He missed most of the Hawks’ West Coast trip, but returned last week against the Boston Celtics. The Hawks haven’t fared well this season with Johnson out of the lineup, and that makes sense because he does a lot for the team.
Johnson is averaging 18.9 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game this season, and he is pushing for MVP honors. He does almost everything on the court for the Hawks, such as crashing the boards, getting out in transition and being a solid defender. Along with Tree Young, they’ve been a big plus on the court together, and head coach Quin Snyder usually keeps them together instead of squandering minutes.
Without Johnson, the Hawks lack a player who can rebound and push the ball while also pressuring the rim. They will also be missing their second scorer, which means other players in the team will need to step up. Trae Young is the obvious answer, but De’Andre Hunter and Bogdan Bogdanovic will need to help, as will Onieak Okongwu since he’s now the starting center.
Right now, the Hawks are hoping Johnson’s injury isn’t serious and he won’t have to miss much time.
