The NBA is making an intriguing shot clock adjustment for the 2025-26 season
commissioner Adam Silver and company had a host of issues on their hands this season, including a perceived NBA ratings issue as well as the lack of attention given by the current best teams in the league. With problems this big, fans might not expect the league to be focused on more trivial matters, but that’s exactly what they’ve been insinuating recent announcement regarding the way the games are timed.

It’s unclear exactly what effect the NBA intends the new shot clock to have on the in-game experience, other than perhaps making the court a little more visible to people sitting in certain rows behind the basket.

The way the shot clock actually worked has changed in recent years, as the league made it so that if a team secured an offensive rebound, the shot clock would reset to 14 instead of 24, which may be at least part of the reason it exists in the last time records such an increase in the result.
Other changes fans were clamoring for included doing something about the current influx of three-point shooting, which essentially eliminated the different styles of play that defined previous eras of basketball, even if today’s offense is as efficient as ever.
Fans are also wondering why in the last few postseasons the league has refused to put an “NBA Playoffs” logo on the court, as was the custom before, or to paint a large trophy over the team logos during the Finals.
For now, fans will have to be content with changing the structure of the shooting hour, even if it wasn’t the most pressing issue.
