The Chicago Bulls they plan to retire Derrick Rose’s jersey next season.
The team said president and CEO Michael Reinsdorf personally informed the Chicago product and former MVP Saturday that his No. 1 will be sent to the rafters sometime during the 2025-26 season. Rose will join Michael Jordan (23), Scottie Pippen (33), Jerry Sloan (4) and Bob Love (10) as the only Bulls players to have their numbers retired.
The team said more details will be released later.
“Derrick is both a hometown hero and a symbol of an entire era of Bulls basketball,” president Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement.
The announcement comes on the same day they honor the Bulls Rose, who retired in September after 16 seasonswith tributes paid before and during their game against New York Knicks.
They were to unveil the “Derrick Rose Experience” in the atrium of the United Center, which will feature memorabilia from his career. Players on both teams were required to wear the shooter’s themed shirts with the words “1.4.25” to symbolize the date, as well as the numbers he wore for the Bulls, Knicks and Simeon Career Academy in Chicago. There were moments during the game where you recognize Rose, his family and his teammates.
Rose, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, went from Rookie of the Year to All-Star to NBA MVP in his first three seasons. He is still the youngest MVP of the league, having won it at the age of 22.
A major knee injury during the 2012 playoffs forced him to miss nearly two full seasons and he considered retiring several times due to other injury issues.
Rose averaged 17.4 points and 5.2 assists in 723 regular season games. He averaged 21 points per game before the ACL tear 12 years ago and 15.1 per game in the seasons that followed.
