What’s going on with the San Diego Aztecs? This season is not going the way coach Brian Dutcher and the entire fan base had hoped. Not that SDSU is a bad team. The Aztecs are still likely to make the NCAA Tournament. However, they do not make life easy for themselves. They could be in the thick of the Mountain West race, but they’ve lost games at home that they didn’t expect to lose.

First, San Diego State blew an 18-point lead at home and lost to Utah State. It was less about the opponent that SDSU lost to; it was much more about having an 18-point lead at home and coming up short. Utah State is a good team, but San Diego State has no business blowing an 18-point lead and losing at Viejos Arena.

Second, San Diego State lost at home to UNLV last weekend. SDSU should be able to take care of the Rebels — who haven’t done much (besides beating Utah State) to that point in the season — in their arena. However, UNLV took over that game and the Aztecs had no answers.

San Diego State dropped eight to UNLV on a day when the Rebels shot just 6 of 20 (30 percent) from 3-point range. How did that happen? UNLV was plus-11 at the free throw line and outrebounded the Aztecs 37-32. San Diego State committed 14 turnovers and just didn’t do anything particularly well. It was a level of mediocrity we’re not used to from SDSU, considering the Aztecs played in the national championship game two seasons ago and then returned to the Sweet 16 last season. No one is saying SDSU should lead or dominate the Mountain West, but the Aztecs should have two more wins than they currently have. This team needs to find a new level of form and focus if they are to make the most of this season. San Diego State is currently outside the top four in the Mountain West and will need to go on a significant winning streak (at least five games) to get back to the very top of the conference title race.

Why San Diego State will cover the spread/win

San Diego State played Air Force One earlier in January. In that game, the Aztecs allowed just four points to the Falcons in the final 11 minutes of the first half. SDSU allowed just 18 points to Air Force over the final 31 minutes of the game and won by 29. If that doesn’t give you a sense of the mismatch in this game, nothing else will. The facts tell a simple and clear story.

Why Air Force Will Cover Spread/Win

San Diego State did beat AFA by 29 earlier in January, but Air Force led that game 20-8 after the first nine minutes before the roof caved in. If the Air Force gets another 20-8 lead or similar midway through the first half, expect the Falcons to do a much better job of protecting that lead on their home floor. That first game was in San Diego. This game will be different if the Falcons can get off to another good start.

San Diego State Air Force Final Prediction and Selection

Leans Air Force, but SDSU is the better team. Maybe wait for the live game, considering how the last game went from a 12-point AFA lead to a 29-point SDSU win.

Final San Diego State-Air Force Prediction & Pick: Air Force +13.5
