Raptors’ Jontay Porter texted bettors during the game
Jontai Porter was banned for life from the NBA after violating league rules. While he was on Toronto RaptorsPorter would deliberately walk away from games and fake injuries to help the bookies put less on him so he could pay off his gambling debt.
Porter was caught up in the sports betting investigation after bookies paid him $20,000. The investigation then showed that he was part of the plan and that he was getting out of the game.
An accomplice was recently arrested at the Las Vegas airport, revealed in court documents to be Porter contacting bookmakers during a Raptors game on Jan. 22 to tell them he would not play again while his eye was examined.

Porter was caught texting accomplices “Back in the locker room to check me out. Idk if I play much more. I’m not starting the second half. But if it’s trash time, I’ll shoot a million shots.”
Porter and everyone involved made this case easy for the investigators, and there were a lot of bad decisions that came along with it. Porter will now never play in the NBA again, and will likely have to face additional consequences for his decision. He has already pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and it will be interesting to see what his sentence will be.
The sports world continued to punish players who were involved in bettingand until now there have been bans and suspensions for it. One strange thing about all of this is that sports promote betting almost every day, and it’s only going to get bigger in the times we live in now. For players, the way Porter was kicked out of the league should make them look the other way if they’re tempted.
