Michigan will look like a juggernaut at times, but then it can become a very sloppy and clueless team. A gulf the size of the Grand Canyon in Michigan is at its best at its worst. The rest of the teams are pretty consistent and never get overwhelmingly great or shockingly awful. Michigan has a much higher degree of variance than most teams in college basketball and Illinois — one of its Big Ten rivals — is much the same way. It will be fascinating to see if a dusty first-year head coach can get this Michigan team to find a consistent way to play, so the floor is still higher even if the ceiling is a little lower. No one doubts that Michigan has the ability to get hot and very dangerous, but no one also doubts Michigan’s capacity to take full advantage and play well below their potential.

Penn State is going through a very frustrating time. The Nittany Lions lost their slate to Iowa a few days ago. Earlier in January, they fell to Michigan State by just five points. They lost to Oregon by one point in a game they led by five with minutes remaining. PSU is trapped in a vicious cycle where they keep trying and have a chance to win games late, but keep coming up short and not making the final three or four plays that separate a win from a win. The Nittany Lions put in the work and effort, but their execution isn’t sharp enough when it really counts. All of Penn State can do their best and focus very calmly on doing the right things in the most crucial moment of the game.

Why Penn State Will Cover the Spread / Win

The Nittany Lions compete with energy and passion. They haven’t won most of the time in the last two weeks, but they are consistently there with a chance to win.
