Nets’ Cam Johnson is sidelined with a serious ankle injury as the trade deadline nears
Cam Johnson could be sidelined for another extended period with a lingering ankle injury as the trade deadline approaches. The Brooklyn Nets ruled the forward out for Wednesday’s matchup with the Phoenix Suns after he injured his ankle again during Tuesday’s loss to the New York Knicks.
“I think it had to do with Mikal (Bridges) guarding him. He stepped up and stuck it just a little bit. It’s the same article. Obviously, it’s going to come out now. We don’t know exactly how long,” head coach Jordi Fernandes said on Wednesday ahead of the game. “He came back several times. Unfortunately, he stuck it again. And again, he’s got discomfort, and we’ve just got to make sure we get that going so we can sustain it the next time he’s in there.”
Johnson missed five games earlier this month after spraining his right ankle during a Jan. 2 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. It was his second time injuring his ankle this season, having originally sprained it during the Nov. 25 win over the Golden State Warriors.
28 year old bounced back for a Jan. 14 win over the Portland Trail Blazers. He broke his ankle in the first half, but managed to finish the game. After re-injuring it on Tuesday, it is unclear when he will return.

Johnson’s injury comes as soon as he appears as one of the NBA’s top trade targets through February 6. The 6-foot-8 sharpshooter is having the best season of his career, averaging 19.4 points on 49/42/90 shooting in 35 appearances.
The Nets are seeking multiple first-round picks for Johnson in a trade, league sources told ClutchPoints. The Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Indiana Pacers, Orlando Magic and Oklahoma City Thunder, among other teams, have been linked to the veteran wing in recent weeks.
After the Suns’ game on Wednesday, Brooklyn will have six more games before the deadline. Based on Fernandez’s comments, the team is likely to be cautious about Johnson’s return timeline after his latest wrist soreness.
