LeBron James: The Los Angeles star set a new record in the victory over the Atlanta Hawks
LeBron James surpassed Michael Jordan for the most 30 points in NBA history as he helped the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Atlanta Hawks 119-102.
The 40-year-old, the league’s all-time leading scorer, scored 30 points to accomplish the feat for the 563rd time and surpass the mark set by Jordan in 2003.
He also moved into fourth place in the NBA in games played with 1,523, one more than Dirk Nowitzki.
He now trails only Robert Parish (1,611), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1,560) and Vince Carter (1,541) for most career games played.
Jordan won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s, becoming a global icon of the sport.
“Very humbling,” James said after Friday night’s win. “Anytime I get mentioned with one of the greats, and probably the greatest to ever play the game, it’s super cool.”
“It’s someone I idolized as a child, and I’m carrying 23 years because of him. So to know that I can sit here and be in a room or in a conversation or whatever, you mention MJ, it’s like a super-duper drug for me.”
Anthony Davis returned from a one-game absence with an ankle problem and had 18 points and 19 rebounds for LA, while Austin Reaves had 20 points as the Lakers won their seventh of nine games.
Trae Young had 33 points and nine assists and Jaylen Johnson added 19 points for the Hawks, who led early before the Lakers took a 14-13 lead with seven minutes, 31 seconds left in a first quarter they never lost.
The Oklahoma City Thunder extended their winning streak to a team-high 14 games with a 117-107 victory over the New York Knicks.
The Thunder trailed 88-80 in the final quarter, but Aaron Wiggins scored 15 of his 19 points, while Shai Giljus-Alexander, who scored a game-high 33, and Jalen Williams, who added 20, also led them to a victory that ended the Knicks’ nine-game winning streak.
Victor Wembanyama finished with 35 points, 18 rebounds and four assists and had a key steal in the final seconds as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Denver Nuggets 113-110.
