Lakers’ LeBron James responds to NBA and NFL Christmas ratings
The battle between the NBA and the NFL for Christmas was specially documented Los Angeles Lakers forward, LeBron James. The latter always supported both leagues whenever he could. However, the NFL has gotten better than the NBA around the holidays, especially Christmas.
After the influx of viewers, James argued that the NBA still rules on Christmas. Despite his claim, the numbers didn’t back up what he was saying. On the New Heights Show, the Los Angeles forward finally admitted that the NFL had an advantage through the NBA.
“I saw the freaking numbers after the fact … From a viewership standpoint, you all blew us away,” James said with a laugh. “The games weren’t as great as they should have been.”
James makes a good point about the games though. Christmas games have always had a unique atmosphere and element. For starters, the teams had custom jerseys for Christmas. In the past five years, that tradition has flown out the window. Many players like James himself and others wanted to return for custom jerseys.
For the NFL, this was their first major broadcast season on Christmas Day. Although it was Wednesday, two games were played. The Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans, as well as the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers. Both games swept the floor with the NBA in terms of viewership. It was 65 million watch football and 5.2 million fans watch basketballthat is,

Although the 5.2 million fans were the largest attendance for a Christmas game in five years, it did not come to an end. However, there were other reasons why the NFL had an advantage over the NBA. for example, Beyoncé performed for the NFL at halftime during the Ravens-Texas game.
In addition, the game was broadcast on Netflix, a service that has 282.7 million paid global subscribers. Streaming the game through that platform brought in all kinds of people. Not to mention, the show itself was very smooth, no issues, and the production behind it was exceptional for a first game.
On the other hand, all NBA Christmas games are broadcast on ABC/ESPN. For some, they may not have cable or a proper streaming service. However, the NBA took more pride in the games. Even with the increased competition, it hasn’t held up to the production that the NFL has.
However, there is always next year to try to close the gap between them.
