Jimmy Butler’s private flights away from the Heat included visiting his ailing father
A strained relationship between Jimmy Butler, Pat Rileyand the Miami Heat gets more complicated as the Feb. 6 trade deadline approaches. On Monday, The Stein Line’s Jake Fisher reported allegations of Fr potential “transgressions” of Butlerincluding skipping “morning scrimmages” and insisting on “private flights separate from the Miami team charter.”
However, senior NBA insider Chris Haynes provided clarity on Tuesday, citing sources close to Butler.
“In the last five years, Jimmy has taken less than five separate flights away from the team, four of which were during the Finals against Denver when his father was sick,” Haynes said.
Butler has previously spoken about his father’s illness in the Netflix documentary Starting 5, released before the start of the 2024-25 season. According to Butler, his father first began experiencing symptoms during Miami’s playoff run in 2023. Doctors diagnosed Butler’s father with terminal cancer between the Heat’s second-round series against the New York Knicks and the Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics.
In the documentary, Butler’s agent Bernie Lee revealed that the diagnosis came just before Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. As Haynes reported, Butler occasionally took private flights during the Finals to visit his father while continuing to play for the Heat against the Denver Nuggets. Butler’s father passed away on February 8, 2024, just months after his diagnosis.
Reported letter from Pat Riley and suspension
Reports of a 10-page letter submitted by Pat Riley to the NBA Players Association detailing Jimmy Butler’s alleged “mistakes” further fueled the tension between Butler and Riley. Former Heat star Tim Hardaway recently addressed the situation on Sirius XM NBA Radio, sharing his perspective on Riley’s actions.
“It’s about accountability,” Hardaway said. “If you can’t take rejection because everything was telling you yes, yes, yes, now you’re upset that the world is coming to an end.” … Pat got a 10-page letter to the Players Association and they’re going to have a film showing why he suspended this man before it even happened.”
The Heat suspended Butler for seven games, a decision Riley reportedly supported with detailed evidence justifying the action.
