Yannick Sinner solidified his campaign at the Australian Open. When he defeated Holger Rune in the fourth round, he was fortunate that Rune — a player whose stamina and endurance have been less than ideal in recent seasons, due to the accumulation of long and bruising matches — was not in top form. Syner was physically unwell during parts of the Rune match, which was played in the sun, but Rune was not an opponent that could make the most of Syner’s own physical struggles. Going into the quarterfinals against Australia’s Alex de Minaur, Sinner knew he wouldn’t have to deal with the bright, hot sun, but he still didn’t know for sure if his body would continue to bark at him.

The match could not have gone better for Sinner. This was the best case scenario for the top seed in this tournament. The Italian passed through De Minaur without any resistance. A very quick and clean match not only gives Sinner enough rest for the semis; that dismissed questions about his overall fitness.

Given that Sinner’s semifinal opponent, Ben Shelton, is a big hitter with a powerful serve, this match doesn’t feel like much of a contest. In other words, there won’t be many, if any, 30-round rallies in which Sinner will have to exert tremendous physical effort. In this match, physical endurance will probably not be a central factor. Ben Shelton won’t be easy for Yannick Sinner to beat, but the bottom line is Sinner won’t be stretched to his physical limits. Health probably won’t be an issue.

This match will be decided on serve and return. The offender will attempt to return first serve returns and damage second serve returns. Shelton has to be big on his return so Sinner can’t establish a comfort zone from the baseline. Shelton is unlikely to win longer rallies, so he will try to play first-hand tennis and hit before Sinner can create the desired rhythm in the basic exchanges. Shelton had a fantastic tournament, but he didn’t play anyone as well as Sinner. This is the ultimate test for the young American, who is in his second major semi-final.

Why Jannik Sinner will win

Yannick Sinner played like the world No. 1 in his quarterfinal demolition of Alex de Minaur. He should be physically fit for this match. He is clearly a better player than Ben Shelton, whose only chance to win (realistically) is to serve huge and not break down and win at least one if not two tiebreaker sets. The margins are slim for Shelton, big for Sinner, who looks like the favorite to win this tournament.

Why Ben Shelton Will Win

Sinner is strong, but when the Italian defeated Alex de Minaur, he faced an opponent who did not have a great serve. Ben Shelton has a big serve. He can hold serve, get into tiebreaks and beat them. Shelton could win this match without breaking Sinner’s serve. This could be 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 in favor of the American. Even if he loses the match, Shelton could play a tiebreaker or two and cover the spread. If Sinner wins 7-6, 7-5, 6-3, that’s Shelton’s cover, not Sinner’s cover.

Final Sinner-Shelton Prediction & Pick

Shelton will win at least five games in two sets because of his serve. They probably won’t win the match, but they will force at least one tiebreaker. That will allow Shelton to cover the spread. Take Shelton.

Final Sinner-Shelton Prediction & Pick: Shelton +6.5
