Iga Sviatek is trying to get closer to the standard established on the hard surface by Arina Sabalenka. Sviatek owns the red clay, as evidenced by her dominance in Poland Garros in recent years. She has not reached the final of a major tournament on hard court since winning the US Open in 2022. She at least needs to make the final in these two weeks in Melbourne to think her game is still going in the right direction.

Before Iga lifted the trophy in New York in September 2022, Emma Raducanu became a star at the 2021 US Open. That year’s final between Raducanu and Leilah Fernandez remains one of the most incredible and unexpected major singles finals of all time. Two players who were completely off the radar before the start of the tournament ended up meeting for the main title. What adds to the unlikely and improbable nature of that hard court grand final three and a half years ago is that no woman has returned to a grand final since.
