Ema Raducanu plays Iga Sviatek In the first round in 2025 Australian Open. Our Australian Open quota series has our Raducanu-Sviatek prediction, odds and picks. Learn how to watch Raducana-Sviatek.

Iga Sviatek is trying to get closer to the standard established on the hard surface by Arina Sabalenka. Sviatek owns the red clay, as evidenced by her dominance in Poland Garros in recent years. For Sviatek to take the proverbial “next step” in her career, cooling off a red-hot Sabalenka at major tournaments on hard courts would fulfill that larger goal. Swiatek’s 2025 season needs at least one major feat outside of Roland Garros for the young superstar to think he’s on the right track and has an even brighter future ahead of him. Sviatek either needs to win on hard court — which he has two chances to do — or he needs to reach his first Wimbledon semifinal. Sviatek has won one major on hard court, the 2022 US Open, but has not won another and has never won the Australian Open. She has not reached the final of a major tournament on hard court since winning the US Open in 2022. She at least needs to make the final in these two weeks in Melbourne to think her game is still going in the right direction.

In this third round of the tournament, Sviatek faces the woman who is right before her as the US Open champion.

Before Iga lifted the trophy in New York in September 2022, Emma Raducanu became a star at the 2021 US Open. That year’s final between Raducanu and Leilah Fernandez remains one of the most incredible and unexpected major singles finals of all time. Two players who were completely off the radar before the start of the tournament ended up meeting for the main title. What adds to the unlikely and improbable nature of that hard court grand final three and a half years ago is that no woman has returned to a grand final since.

Raducanu is the underdog against Iga Sviatek in this match — make no mistake about it — but she knows what it’s like to win a major tournament on hard court. If she could do it once, she surely believes she can do it again. Is this the tournament where Radučan gets fired up and makes another unexpected deep run to a major trophy in women’s tennis? A third round match between two great champions is not something you see all the time. That’s why this matchup is so interesting, regardless of whether it becomes a close contest.

Why Emma Raducanu will win

Iga Sviatek looks like a tennis player in form right now, but Emma Raducanu has more game than Sviatek’s first opponents. Radučana defeated the seed — Ekaterina Aleksandrova — and then the former main semifinalist, Amanda Anisimova, in her first two matches. These wins should leave Raducana battle-tested in ways that should help her against Sviatek.

Why Iga Sviatek will win

Sviatek is rolling. She looks like a hungry and focused elite athlete ready to take the next step. They will eat Radučana.
