Cowboys’ Jerry Jones says goodbye to Mike McCarthy after big decision
The Dallas Cowboys have messed up their head coaching situation since the end of the regular season. At first it seemed like Jerry Jones and they intended to keep the company Mike McCarthywhose contract expires on January 14. However, the talks between the two sides are at a standstill and McCarthy is now out as the Cowboys coach.
Shortly after the move was announced, Jones issued a lengthy statement regarding McCarthy in a Cowboys social media post.
“Before we got to the point of negotiating a contract, it became mutually clear that it would be better for each of us to go in a different direction,” the statement said. “I thank Mike and wish him, his wife Jessica and their family all the best.” They have been a wonderful part of our community here. We will immediately begin the search process to hire the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

The timing of the decision and how it was made is somewhat of a surprise, as it puts the Cowboys behind the 8-ball in their search for their next head coach. Mike Vrabel has already been named the next head coach of the New England Patriots and most of the other candidates have already interviewed with teams looking for a coach.
Two of the top coaching candidates are the two coordinators of the Detroit Lions, who have been one of the best teams in the NFL all season. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn are two of the top candidates, but the timing of the Cowboys’ decision to let McCarthy go does not allow Jones to interview either from them. The Cowboys could talk to Johnson and Glenn during the Lions’ bye week, but now they’ll have to wait until the season ends in Detroit.
The Cowboy job is appealing for several different reasons. You have a star quarterback and a star receiver on offense and one of the best edge rushers in football on defense. Some of the Cowboys’ young pieces have also stepped up a lot for them over the past few seasons, so the roster is in a decent spot. That alone should make this one of the most desirable openings of this cycle.
