Bears’ ‘sleeping giant’ Bears claim to confuse Vikings, Packers fans

Earlier this week, The Chicago Bears have hired former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to be the franchise’s next head coach after Detroit’s divisional round loss to the Washington Commanders. Hopefully, Johnson can unlock some of the aspects of the former No. 1 overall pick Played by Caleb Williams who remained inactive this season.

Recently, Johnson had his first press conference in the Windy City, and his take on how he viewed the Bears organization from afar is likely to delight Chicago fans – and confuse Lions fans.

“Coming into this season, I felt like this place was a sleeping giant,” Johnson said via the Bears’ official account on X, formerly Twitter. “To be honest with you, I personally was more concerned about the Chicago Bears than anybody else in this division.

Fans of the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, who finished well ahead of Chicago in the standings this year, might be a little confused by Johnson’s claim. He made sure to admit what actually happened later.

“Now, there’s a number of reasons why that didn’t happen. That’s why I’m here. “I’m going to get to the bottom of it, and we’ll see if we can get it right and clean it up,” Johnson said. “But I was very encouraged by what was already on the roster here, and like I said before, this division, as tough as it is, I’m really excited to compete here.”

Can Ben Johnson unlock the Bears?

Indeed, many projected Chicago entering the season as a potential playoff threat because of the number one overall pick in Williams, as well as the array of resources the team spent to assemble a serviceable wide receiver corps.

Unfortunately, many of those receivers didn’t produce, Williams took some time to settle in, and the Bears were bogged down by coaching indiscretions throughout the campaign en route to missing the postseason by a wide margin, while every other team in their division made it.

Still, there’s optimism that Johnson’s expertise can get the Bears back on track, even if it’s a year later than fans had hoped.
