He expected the Eagles’ DeVonta Smith to play against the Packers, but there’s a catch

The Philadelphia Eagles will open their postseason slate with a contest against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, but they are dealing with some significant injury issues before this one. Jalen Hurts was able to clear the concussion protocol on Friday, and AJ Brown is back in training, but now there is a new problem with DeVonta Smith.

Smith has dealt with countless injuries throughout the season, causing him to miss four games for the Eagles along the way. Smith seemed to be doing well, but he was done he does not practice on Friday due to back tightness. Despite that, Philadelphia still expects the talented wildout to play against the Packers, indicating they’re simply being cautious with him ahead of their do-or-die game.

“DeVonta Smith is not practicing today.” He has tightness in his back. He’s still expected to play,” Zach Berman said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

At this point in the season, everyone is rattled, but with the season on the line, it’s going to take a lot for these guys not to play. Smith’s back may be bothering him, so the Eagles decided to give him the day off to make sure he’ll be ready to go on Sunday. Of course, his injury status could change in the next 48 hours, but for now, Philadelphia doesn’t seem too concerned about his latest ailment.

If Smith ends up being unable to play, Brown would assume a larger role in the offense, with Jahan Dotson filling the No. 2 wide receiver role. Hopefully Smith will play, and while the team doesn’t seem too concerned about his status, it’s worth keeping an eye on the next day in case something goes wrong for him.
