Zach Edey of the Grizzlies leaves the game with an injury against the Spurs
The The Memphis Grizzlies were one of the best teams in the Western Conference this year, thanks in part to a next-man-up mentality. Even while struggling with injuries to some of their key players throughout the season, the Grizzlies still climbed to third place in the Western Conference.
The Grizzlies were put to the test in that department again on Friday night, as they were forced to play the San Antonio Spurs without star point guard Ja Morant, who missed the game with a foot injury. With this absence, Morant will no longer be eligible for postseason awards because now it is mathematically impossible for him to reach the threshold of 65 games.
During the game, another injury hampered the Grizzlies in the frontcourt. Rookie center Zach Edey went down with a nose injury after challenging Julian Champagne’s layup. The champagne inadvertently ignited Edei in the face with an elbow as he goes up, knocking the former Purdue star out of the game.

Edey was treated for the injury on the bench, but did not return to the game. He played just seven minutes tonight and scored four points with four rebounds.
Despite playing the game without two starters in Morant and Edei, who did not play after the first quarter, the Grizzlies cruised to a road win in San Antonio. Memphis jumped all over the Spurs in the third quarter to run away 140-112 and give them their second away win against Spurs in just three days.
The win puts the Grizzlies at 27-15 this season, placing them just one behind the Houston Rockets for second place in the Western Conference. Fortunately for them, Edey’s injury doesn’t appear to be super serious, and neither is Morant’s, so the two should be back on the court soon to help the Grizzlies continue to win. Regardless, it’s impressive how the Grizzlies continue to win regardless of who is available and who is out due to injury.
