How Reid Shepard’s ‘spongy’ attitude with the Rockets is shaping the rookie’s future
Perhaps the only experience more humbling than hitting an NBA rookie wall for a first-round draft pick is going to the G-League airport. Reed Sheppard has taken bumps, bruises, and some occasional turbulence this season while channeling a bit of SpongeBob into everyday life. ClutchPoints caught up with Shepard, the G-League’s newest player the week after the loaded but flawed Houston Rockets sent Ja Morant missed the Memphis Grizzlies.
Sheppard, the newest G-League Player of the weekaveraged 30.7 points, 8.0 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals in three games with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Novak’s 40.5% mark from beyond the three-point arc is encouraging for Houston. Still, Shepard’s stats (3.3 points, 1.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 32.2% 3PA) in 30 games this season with the Rockets against tougher competition cannot be ignored.
Neither can good advice from NBA veterans. Shepard still needs time to grow into his expected role with the Rockets next season. A hands-on beginner’s approach to getting better every day depends on engagement. Because of that, Shepard is never seen too far away from any Rockets huddle.
“I learned a lot. “Obviously the game is a lot different, so every day is about learning, going in and being like a sponge to soak up everything you can,” Shepard said. “Guys like Aaron Holiday, they see their day. It’s all about learning as much as I can and becoming a better basketball player.”
Life for an NBA rookie isn’t all about games and practices; it’s an all-encompassing, lifestyle-changing experience. Shepard also soaks up those benefits. Charter flights and chatting with future Hall of Famers are just some of the extra perks provided to top players.
So what is Shepard enjoying most with the Rockets?

“Everything that comes with (being an NBA player),” Shepard laughed. “The journey. The talent that is there. Every time you enter the gym, you can see the best players in the world practicing and playing. I’m just taking it all in and enjoying every bit of it.”
Despite spending time in the G-League, which could be a demotivating experience for some, Shepard embraced every moment with the enthusiasm and mindset of a student.
“I think I just show up every day with a good attitude,” Shepard replied. “I’m just enjoying everything and I’m grateful.” It’s a deep state of gratitude for everything, just focusing and learning as much as I can to become a better player.”
The Rockets (26-12) like it because Houston has made a significant jump in the Western Conference standings this season. Creating a winning foundation for rookies like Reed Shepard is critical to future success. Fortunately, it sounds like everyone is on the same page when it comes to NBA minutes, G-League assignments and when opportunities will be available.
