Josh Allen beat Jim Kelly in Bills franchise playoff history

Things got tense for a moment at Highmark Stadium on Sunday afternoon. In their opening Wild Card round, the Buffalo Bills they found themselves in a very early 7-0 hole after the Denver Broncos’ rookie quarterback Bo Nix connected with former college teammate Troy Franklin for a 43-yard touchdown on the first possession of the game.

Slowly but surely, Buffalo took control of the game, took a 10-7 lead into the halftime locker room and extended that lead to 21-7 by the end of the 3rd quarter thanks to a 4th touchdown pass from Josh Allen Not only did that make it a two-possession game for Ty Johnson, but made Bills franchise history.

With that score, Josh Allen surpassed Jim Kelly as Buffalo’s all-time leader in touchdown passes in the postseason. Kelly has thrown 21 touchdown passes in 17 career playoff games. Allen threw his 22. — and the 23rd — career playoff walk in just his 11th postseason game, further cementing his status as one of the greatest players in Bills franchise history.

Allen is just over 9,000 yards shy of Kelly’s regular-season passing yardage and 43 passing touchdowns away from the Hall of Fame’s first spot on the Bills’ all-time passing touchdown list. If Allen ends up surpassing Kelly’s mark of 237 regular-season passing yards, he would join Cam Newton as the only players in league history to lead an NFL franchise in both career passing yards and rushing touchdowns.

In the end, Buffalo defeated Denver 31-7 on Sunday afternoon, setting up a compelling Divisional Round matchup against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens next weekend. It is likely that when the league MVP votes are finally tallied, it will be Allen and Jackson finishing No. 1 and No. 2 in some order.
