Tony Gonzalez compares Steelers’ Mike Tomlin to Philly’s Andy Reid
The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered a brutal defeat in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. Pittsburgh fell 28-14 against Baltimore on Saturday in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score suggested. This shocking result led to speculation about the future of the Steelers, including the quarterback and head coaching positions.
After the game, Prime Video analyst Tony Gonzalez made some interesting comments about the Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.
“We talked about it in the preseason game,” Gonzalez said on the postgame broadcast, via On3. “Mike Tomlin’s team comes out and chokes like this again.” I said there was a whisper and I got little messages like, ‘What do you mean whisper?’ I don’t say the F-word. I’m not saying fire Mike Tomlin.”
Gonzalez continued by saying he believes Tomlin could benefit from going to another team. Just like Andy Reid did by joining the Chiefs.
“What I’m saying is maybe the change of scene, Andy Reid’s style, he had so much success there in Philly, and then he went to Kansas City and started a dynasty,” Gonzalez continued. “This would be something that would be mutually agreed upon if Mike Tomlin got a job elsewhere, and he would get a job right away.”
Gonzalez is probably right that Tomlin would be a hot commodity if he left Pittsburgh. Tomlin famously never had a losing record with the Steelers. This is a great sign yes he can sustain success over a long period of time.
The bigger question is whether Tomlin would even want to leave the Steelers.

Tomlin and the Steelers had a terrible first half against the Ravens on Saturday.
Pittsburgh went into halftime on a 21-0 run, which put them in a deep enough hole that they couldn’t climb out of.
Tomlin was credited with one Ravens player as the X-factor that turned the game into a one-sided contest.
“The X-factor was Lamar’s unique talent… They wore us down a little bit.” The fatigue component became a factor,” Tomlin said during his postgame press conference.
Jackson had an incredible game, throwing for 175 yards and two touchdowns. He also added 15 carries for 81 yards on the ground. The combination of Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson was too much for Pittsburgh. Henry broke several long runs as defenders tried to figure out Lamar as a rush threat.
Henry finished the game with 26 carries for 186 yards and two touchdowns.
Henry and Jackson are nearly impossible to slow down throughout the game. Even so, that won’t provide much comfort to a Steelers team and fan base wondering about their future over the next few months.
